Anyone else want to put a headliner in their hardtop?

I'm going to put a layer of closed cell foam, then a synthetic felt in my 109 hardtop. I've spoke to a few who have done this and it appears that the ONLY adhesive to use is the 3M sprayable product, which is only available in 5-gallon tubs. So, I need a few in need of the same headliner so we can spray the 5-gallons in one morning. We could combine sourcing the foam and felt, and set a shop date too.

Looking to finish this up in June.

Any takers?

I wouldn't mind getting in on this. Is this the Mercedes Jim headliner you're talking about?

I have the LaSalle headliner, but would love to put something to lower the noise. I'm in.

I have a 109 SW with the safari top that needs a headliner. Would this work for this setup you propose? What about those pesky cutouts for the vents?

Yup, I'm planning on what Mercedes-Jim did, which is effective, but non-traditional. So I haven't really thought about fixing the original-type panels, but I'm sure we could figure it out if you don't like the look of this:

Although, Jim did show me where his began to sag after a couple years use. He attributed this to the choice of adhesive, hence the desire to use the good 3M stuff.

Here is Jim's write-up: SeriesTrek Headliner (http://www.seriestrek.com/headliner.html)

I'll start to track down the adhesive...

That's looks pretty cool Tom. After pulling brand new headliners out the box, and having already started to sag before install, I'd go with a non-stock approach as well:) Keep the pics the coming....

Tom P, where/when would this shop day take place?

Tad,

You're welcome to drop-off a roof off on your way through NJ, and pick it up on a later trip. I can put in the headliner, and given I'd have it for a few weeks, I could even re-rivet the gutter if it needed...

I'll offer my place for the shop day (Frenchtown NJ 08825). Realistically I'd target late June, or any time in July. I still have to put my motor back togethet to free-up a garage bay, then strip and paint my roof panel. You know, it's never over...

That means I would be topless and I just can't see my wife putting up with me topless! (Now, the other way around... )

I was lucky enough to spend last weekend on a boat and I saw a hull-liner I really liked. I also found an inexpensive foil-backed heat/noise dampener, I'm not yet sure if this would be better than the closed cell foam I originally picked-out.

I need to do a little chemistry checking, to make sure all the materials and adhesive are compatible, then I'll post info on what I plan to use. Aside from adhesive I don't think there is any advantage to a bulk order, but you could at least see what I'm planning...

Ya let us know. Your to far away for me (that and i will be ready to do this in about 8 months).

I would like to know what you end up using for the headliner.
I have used that 3M spray glue before (only in the aerosol cans) and i it does work great and holds up real well.

I really am going to do the headliner this Summer! Keeping the 109 topless for the past year has really cut the driving time/distance to a non-fun level:mad:. No idea what weekend will work for me, so post your interest and we can narrow down a mutually agreeable date...

BTW, I've found an even better insulation that's really, really light. This should take some of the load off the adhesive.

I've chosen adhesives, and am looking for them locally. I hope to get this roof project done in September... maybe it will not be raining then!
