View Full Version : S11A Roll bar installation needed

I am not sure where to start, so thought this would be the best forum. I have a nicely restored show condition S11a, but I want to install a frame-attached roll bar, and then probably seat belts. More for family safety than anything (read: wife-concerns-about-kids). I dont really care about 'showing' it, so that wont be an issue. As long as the roll bar still fits within the canvas top.

Anyone in this club looking for additional business? I would consider shipping my vehicle wherever it had to go, but dont mind driving locally. I live in Berwyn, PA.

Otherwise any recommendations?

Ivar - I don't do rollbar stuff, but I do live in Berwyn. Wow! What a coincidence. Are you looking to have one custom fabbed and installed? I'd be happy to help with your rig anytime you might need it (I am currently, slowly but surely, piecing together a 1974 SIII lightweight that, might I add, did not fall apart at Robesonia this weekend). I would be interested to see how this all works out, as I will eventually do the same for the lightweight.

I know Sean (Crazyfish on this forum) has used an outfit in the Doylestown Area called "Fosters" (right Sean?) that does fab and welding. I am guessing that they could probably do something like that given my recollection of my conversation with Sean about this exact topic (don;t quote me on this....).

There is always ECR in Maine, ( http://www.eastcoastrover.com/safaricage.html ) etc. that do amazing work, but price and time become an issue, I suppose, as these kinds of Rover-specific craftspeople are always doing a million things at once.

Some images from ECR, Series IIa frame-mounted cage ( http://www.eastcoastrover.com/77.html ):

Anyway, I live on Old Lancaster Rd, right on the other side of the tracks from Casey's Ale House. Very cool to hear from other Rover owners in Berwyn, drop me a line!

Hi Kirk,

Thanks for the response. Mmmm, Casey's, my local. I live in Westwind dr, at the bottom of Contention Lane. Just a few houses up from Contention intersection. I did once (3 years ago?) see a nice 109 on Old state passing me. I'm still looking for it. Also a well eqiuped white D110 lives on Contention, but it has disappeared for the past two months.

I did see the ECR site, and that is what I am looking for. But as you say, costly. As well as shipping costs. But I would still consider that if I had no other option.

I will send you an email to talk more private issues that will bore everyone else on this forum, like having a beer or two at Caseys. And seeing your lightweight.

I will be at Casey's tonight after about 9 PM for a monthly "Guy's Night" (first monday of the month). Eating some wings, drinking some beer and watching some Monday Night Football. I will be wearing a navy blue "60"th Anniversary Land Rover baseball cap if you happen to be in the neighborhood.

There's that guy in Elizabethtown. I hear he's got a good Hobart welder and a Thermadyne plasma cutter, as well as a joint jonny for cutting tube to fit at angles. Doesn't have a tubing bender but has some connections.
Oh, wait, that's me!

I bet we could put a group order together that would pay for a nice pipe bender and perhaps winter heat for that shop space!!!!:D

Seriously Trevor, can you do it? Do you have the time and do you really need the money :)

Neil,

How about external front, internal rear for us 2-door 109's?

Maybe make the same cage for 88's with one less rear hoop?!?!?

I'd love to have one or two internal hoops in the the 109. At least one in the middle.

I was thinking external so that it wouldn't interfere with the hard top, soft top or truck cab installation or removal and I could use it as racks for the kayaks.....10 birds one stone

I like that idea of 'roof racks', but cant envision how it would fit over my soft top. Any engineers prepared to give us a design? Photographs? We could keep Trevor in business for the next year!

something like the roll cages on the NAS 110's

FWIW, I wouldn't build a cage like that ECR pic. In a rollover that is only going to crush down or the bolts are going to shear in side load. It is more of a pain but the roll cage needs to go to the top of the frame like the safety devices style. This would require cutting through the bottom of the tub, but if you are willing to do an external cage you are already considering cutting your body.

I would rather have DAP's rollbar that sits on the tub edges than the ECR one.

Where can I see an example of the DAP rollbar?

Look for the roll bar, this still isn't a perfect solution as the tub sides can collapse, but most Series roll overs I have seen are so slow that this would keep you from going all the way over.

The military set-up for a soft-top is similar to this style.

You know, that may just work.

Doesnt look too functional, but as you say, roll overs are slow. As for my purpose, its so that the billion kids in the back who think my car is a fun taxi or a chick magnet for 12-year olds can have something to hold on to, as well as the fact that I can attach seat belts. Its not heavy duty, but may serve my purpose.

I wont need to cut up any body work either.

Here is what I was thinking Neil:

External front as it's easier to deal with installation, then internal rear. You may even be OK with just the rear internal section. Plus you could bolt a roof rack through the roof skin, directly to the cage.

I have an ex-military capping mounted roll bar coming from Ike, whenever he sends my slider and winch bumper order. I will let you know what I think of it after I mount it on my now soft top 109 three (two?) door. I figure it has to be better than no protection at all, but won't be up to the standards of a chassis mounted bar or cage. I know how well the 88 performed during its multiple roll....
