On the block is the heater shutoff. A stem valve style mid sixties pantry sink cold water style shutoff. Just like aforementioned plumbing device it doesn't get used enough and then leaks when it does along the stem.

Is there a rubber seat at the bottom of the stem? Can one get it out? Will it swell up and sort of fix itself if exercised?

A new valve is $50.... It's been an expensive month already, and it's not getting better......

Oscar,

Go to the VW dealer and ask for a heater valve for a mid-80's Golf (Rabbit). It is an in-line globe valve, cost is around $15, and you can put it anywhere along the heater hose. I have mine set-up to actuate with a choke cable - nice, easy, smooth operation too.

OK, except that one end of this one screws into the block..... What did you use for a fitting there?

There is a threaded hose barb that goes into the head and/or t-stat housing:

Avialable from suppliers like RN (http://www.roversnorth.com/store/p-2320-adapter-heater-pipe-225l.aspx)

I believe it is 1/2-BSPP. It is the same as the sump's drain plug. I can bring one in to work tomorow and check - if you can wait...

I keep a few plugs on-board in case I have to bypass the heater circuit.

I can wait..... But, I still have the question: Can one take the stem out of the valve and get to the washer?

LR heater valve? Never owned one so I can't comment.

The ports on the head/t-stat housing are 3/8-BSPP. Just get the threaded hose-barb fitting from RN and you're good to go. If you need to use he truck you can hose them together until you get the rest of the heater bits together.

The 2.25l Diesel may require a different fitting.

Here is the only photo I have of the VW valve (I couldn't find the part-number):
