Hello,
I was all set to buy some 16" wolf wheels and 235/85/16 tires for my SIII 88".

Now I came across a good deal for 16" wolf wheels with 7.5 R16 tires.

I’ll be the first to admit, I know nothing about tires or sizes, my math is horrible as well.

So I need help, and preferably pics to make my choice and decision easier. What are the differences between these two sizes? Which are taller? Which are wider? Which IYHO looks more "rover-like". Thanks for your input.

Take Care,

Jeremy

I'm not a series guy, but click here (http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp?action=submit) for a size comparison.

Diameter is very close but the 235's are wider.

I think that the 7.5's would be more authentic, but others are better qualified to answer the question.

I have 235's on my RRC and really like them, not that that helps at all.

Edit: the search values didn't save in the link, so you'll have to enter them to see the comparison.

Here you go:

235/85R16
Section Width: 9.25 in 235 mm

Rim Width Range: 6 - 7 in

Overall Diameter: 31.72 in 805.68 mm

7.50R16

Section Width: 7.51 in 191 mm

Rim Width Range: 5.5 - 7 in

Overall Diameter: 31.64 in 803.65 mm

Thank you Trevor....those are the numbers I wanted to see.

If any 88" owners have 235/85/16's or 7.50 R16....please post some pics.

Thanks again,

Jeremy

Wow......that is is one tough looking rover! very nice.

Let me ask, why do you want to upgrade to the 235 / 85 / 16's ????

Just trying to get as much info as possible before I drop the cash.

To find 7.50 today...more than likely they are made by off brand company, i.e.,
quality and material questions. 235 are radial and one has more options in general design and use. Tires that I am considering...Truxus...Dunlap R/T...Federal courgia...Cooper SST...and the mud tire made for Pep Boys by Cooper. Hope this helps and not cloud the issue

I have Dunlop Radial Rover R/T in I think 235/85. Pic here at SCC http://gallery.roversclub.org/displayimage.php?album=1&pos=38

Here it is over on tirerack.com http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Dunlop&tireModel=Radial+Rover+R%2FT

I like the way it looks, rides nice and has held up well. I know a few Disco's that run them too.

It definitely helps......I'm in no rush, I want to get as much imput from owners as possible. It all helps.

The tire package I found is (5) 7.50 R16's (G90's by Goodyear) and (5) 16" Wolf wheels. He's asking $625 total. I thought that even though I planned on the 235's......this deal might be to good too pass up.

Do you think that there is a visible size difference between the two?

you might also consider the Goodyear Authority sold only at Wal-mart. Price was fairly good for 235/85/16 tire but still pricey.

I have the G90 and wolf combo for my 109 rebuild. For the price you can't beat it. I was looking for the new Goodrich MT's and the 5 tyres alone were over $1000 and the wolf rims from RN were about $500. It was a no brainer.

One thing that I found out when we tried to install these wheels on my Series III was that the wheel is much thicker than the original metal wheels that came with the Series. What this means is the studs that hold the wheel to the axle are too short. We are in the process of installing wheel spacers that we bought from Rovers North, but the studs on those had to be removed and replaced with longer bolts. Also, the bore of the spacer had to be machined out to remove a chamfer at the outside of the spacer.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I'm running 235/85 Truxxs MT and NATO wheels on my S2 109 Truck cab. I didn't choose that size as much as I had the set of wheels and tires already on my Rangie, than my 109 Dbl Cab and now on the P'up! They've served their purpose well.
At $625, that's a good deal.

I too have 7.50x16's on my Series and IMO they are the perfect Series size. They are a tough size to find sometimes and my next set will likely be 235/85's as they are almost the same.

Mine of 7.50x16's

And Sven's on 235/85's

And Neil, that frame is looking sexy. Has a fine physique just like yourself. :D

Various non- action shots of the 109. Sometimes stuck. So is the LR3.

Thanks for all your pics and info everyone. I'm still up in the air...but now leaning towards the 7.5R16's. Here's a pic....

That is a great deal and if you plan to buy tires I would do it. Just be aware of the stud issue as I have heard what Ken said, you will need longer studs.

I am very close to buying them....seems like the best move but what Ken mentioned is definitely lingering over head right now. The seller told me he has the same set on his 74 SIII MOD 88" without any problems or spacer modifications. But then again, mine's not a MOD.

Neil or Larry can speak up but there should not be a difference from the MOD and Civy in regards to hubs/wheels.

As far as I am aware, there is no difference between Series 3 Civy and MOD lugs and rims. I have been told to get Defender lugs, and press them in. Everyone who is going to MAR...., have a great time...I will be thinking of you....can't make it to Bill's either...I am just about an hour north of his place, so close but so far:( .

Trevor made the point that D1, Defender etc were the same length as the Series and the thickness of the brake drum was the difference

Am I right?

The wolf rims on my D1 and the on the Series appear to be inset by about the same amount - ie. the threads don't come all the way to the outside of the lugs, so I assume thread length is similar. You should be fine.

G90's by Goodyear and Wolf wheels.

I was looking at those last Spring. To be honest, you'll be hard pressed to see much difference between 235/85 and 7.50x16. Depending on your springs, "maybe" a little more articulation clearance in the rear wheel wells from 7.50x16.

Also, there is no difference between civy/MoD hubs or lugs.

Be sure to get a date code off the tires they plan to ship you. You don't want to buy too "old" of a tire.

Thanks for all your help, info, & pics. 90% sure I'm buying the 7.50x16. I'll keep you posted with some pics, if & when.

Any one else see a beatiful dark red series this morning on RT 70 in Cherry Hill heading towards Philly? I didn't catch the front so not sure if it was a II, IIa, or III. But by the hard top, I'd say SIII. Jerry can on the back & a galvy safari rack and ladder.

If you come across this post.......hats off to you, very nice sir.

Get beer. Invite friends. Get tools or friends with tools. Brush up on curse words. Jack up the truck. Plan one hour per side. Laugh. Start. Find more powerful tools. Hand out beer. Get sharper tools. Find torch. Find sawzall. Refill torch and beer. Find 6 foot breaker bar.

Continue until done.

Find sawzall.

Discover just how expensive good bi-metallic blades are and buy them anyway to avoid dissapointment.

Actually I did and I have pictures posted on my gallery on this website:rolleyes:

But then it was just a bare frame, I remember my neighbor came out of his house and started complaining about all the noise I was making.

Wheels went on no problem. Very happy with the outcome. Thanks for all your insight. Also got the newly painted top on this weekend. Trying to get a pic up but having problems, says file is too big.

Still couldn't get it uploaded, so I changed my avatar, yet again.
