View Full Version : Ringwood Sunday April 25th NEW DATE

Frank84
01-11-2010, 09:27 PM
Sunday, April 25th (rain, shine, mud, or snow!)
Meet at 9am at the house. We depart 9:15 and generally finish up around 5pm. PM me for the address.

***Early March may have snow. There is almost no way I'll cancel a Land Rover event because of snow (even if I'm the only one there) but I might require snow chains or knobby tires depending on conditions.***

Plan is to spend time dismantling another car so we can start carting it off to recycle.

Bring lunch, work gloves, and a few garbage bags. Space is limited per the park's request.

Hi Frank,

I haven't participated in any kind of Land Rover activity in quite a while. I was thinking about getting involved again. Can you pencil me in for that day. Thanks.

Frank, just confirming that I am signed up already. Hopefully, Vinnie will have me up and running (alternator, sensors, brakes, etc. the usual stuff).

Hey Frank can you tell me a little bit about this place. jill and I are thinking of coming over.

We basically spend the day driving to an area within Ringwood State Park (Northern NJ) on forest fire roads/trails. They are generally closed to four wheeling but we get permission for the day because we're cleaning up. I'd rate the trails a rausch creek green with an occasional blue spot. Stock trucks can make it but they may require some finesse in spots.

It generally takes a few hours to drive the 4 miles or so to the clean up area where we'll be working on cutting up and hauling out some junked cars and other misc. garbage that was dumped years ago. We bring everything out and recycle - there's a local place that takes it for free and is very convenient. It's a good way to get on some normally inaccessible trails and do some community service at the same time.

The biggest problem for the event is the location - you can't just meet up later in the day which makes it tough for PA people to get here. It is a maze of trails and we do our work in a far corner of the park. We leave from my parent's house in Ringwood at 9am and hit the dirt until 4-5pm generally.

According to Mapquest from Dover, PA (my hometown) to Ringwood NJ: Total Travel Estimate: 3 hours 40 minutes / 201.92 miles

Kinda a long haul. To meet at 9AM I'd have to leave home at 5AM. Not that it wouldn't be worth it but dang.

Yes, definitely a long ride. I get a taste of it at every PA event :) It's why I have a range rover and not a series.

If enough people from PA want to come I'll have the fall event later, say 11am. Tom has it scheduled already for a saturday so you don't have to worry about getting home late and trying to get up for work monday morning. We wouldn't be able to get out to the recycle center though before it closes at 5pm so we'd have to pile up our goodies somewhere for pickup at a later time.

What do PA folks think?

Rob P

I'll venture a tentative yes but Fall is a long way away.

BTW for those who are interested, I have a baby coming around July 25th give or take a week. Fall will be a wait and see kinda time.

im not sure whats going on in march for me.
if its not cold out i would come up and set up a tent for the weekend
that way i will not be in a hurry to get there and home.
brakes the travel time up and road rage.

Tom and I wrote an article about Ringwood for the newsletter last year. I think you can access it at the club website.

I guess its not fair to think that it is unusual that you think it is a long ride, when I make that trip twice a night. I guess it makes a difference when your getting paid to do it.
Frank, if there is still room I want to make this one!
Anybody here going to make it to the Lock Haven event? It sounds interesting!

I drive for UPS Freight, formerly Overnite Transport. Basically, we haul the heavier and sometimes hazmat freight that parcel cannot. My run everynite is from Carteret, NJ to York, PA and back, until just the other nite we found out we are being diverted back to one of our main hubs in Harrisburg due to lower volume in freight.
I frequently travel the NJ tunpike down to 276 and out across the PA tunpke.
The re-branded Overnite tractors are painted a two tone tan w/yellow stripe and then the traditional brown, if you ever see unit# 11211... that's me, although UPS uses such small # decals that it would be difficult.
Plus the fact that it all happens while you guys are sound asleep!

(Finally got registered!)

Looking forward to going on this run as of now. The Rangey's having some quirks...so I'm going to play it by ear as we get closer. But right now, things seem good.

Had a blast at the November run, need to get out again!

TRIP POSTPONED!

Looks like the only date that will work for the Spruce Cabin event is the 6/7th of March so the Ringwood clean up will get moved back.

I'll work out the details with the park when the ranger gets in on wednesday and post up a new date.

Good idea to take aiirdam off, at least you'll have 1 piece instead of 10!

Stock height will be ok, just easy does it. Air damn removal highly recommended, but I coaxed a DII through a few times with it still intact.

Still working on an alternate date. I'll keep everyone posted.

I'm in for it, if someone's willing to offer a passenger's seat for a ride-along. The RRC is giving me a few minor issues lately...and hasn't been driven much since January...and with a lot of roadtrip miles coming this summer...I don't want to risk anything happening more while I give it some "refit work."

What's up with the D2 now?

slipped a liner, rebuilt the engine w/ another block... put 600 miles on it and slipped another liner/cracked the block... haven't dug into it yet.. my gf also ended up totaling her 2003 D2 (she's fine).. so I bought that back and I'm going to take the 4.6 from that and put it in my 2001...

Rob P
03-27-2010, 10:35 PM
Geeze, glad she's OK. Taking out a 4.0 and swapping in a 4.6 I take it? Is there much involved to that? I'd love to do a similar swap to my 96 D1 but that engine runs fine and 4.6 engines don't grow on trees.

Trip is full for Sunday - thanks everyone!

Looks like the forecast is for rain sunday, but the trip is rain or shine so bring a raincoat / umbrella and maybe a second pair of shoes. If it doesn't rain then you'll want bug spray because the gnats are starting to come out:(

I just took a spin through the trails on my bike and there are less trees to clear from recent storms than I expected but there will be a ton of smaller branches. I think we have chain saws covered, but if you have a small hand saw or branch clippers please bring them along, especially if you like your paint.

Here's a checklist on what to bring:
1. lunch/snacks/drinks (non-alcoholic only in the park)
2. garbage bags
3. work gloves
4. rain gear/boots/umbrella
5. branch clippers/hand saw/chainsaw if you have them
6. make sure diff lock (if equipped) and low range are functioning
7. arrive with at least 3/4 tank of gas

If you're running late please call because you won't find us later in the day.

Thanks everyone for coming! We had a great day out in the woods despite a few rain drops. I think the count was at 13 people and 8 trucks - 3 classics, 3 defenders, a DII, and an LR3. We collected a ton of beer cans over about 10 miles of trails and we have some larger debris ready for next time. There were a few new faces out in the woods that we'll hopefully see again soon.

The LR3's electronic traction system was rather impressive, but I think most people were really in love with the diesel clatter coming from the 110.

I would like to know what you mean by "go". I am sure there are many ways to interpret that. Anyways it was a grreat time. By running through the water I was able to wash away all leaky fluids off my undercarraige.

On another note do most people re-grease all the zerk fittings after running through deep water???

People say that you should.... I generally don't, but then again, I seem to go through a lot of u-joints, so if I did it more often I'd probably save them...

Rob P
04-28-2010, 10:15 PM
After going through deep water you should grease everything and some people say to even drain and refill your axles. Something about water making the axles cool down and as they cool the air in them contracts and creates a vacuum that pulls in water from the vent if it isn't high enough or any place else it can get in. I'd stick with a plain greasing if you only drive it a little and check the axles for contaminents.
