would like to get a little more power out of the 3.9

Valve job, port and polish
Rings, bearings
D&D cam, gear set & tappets
cobra fuel injectors
4.6 crank rods and pistons
Janspeed headers and Y pipe
That's about it in the engine
then you can do
gear sets
lockers
drive shafts
axels and cvs
Springs and shocks
crawl box
Tires and wheels
and then what ever personal stuff you like

For the valves tapping, check that all of your exhaust bolts are tight before diving in there. It can make a similar sound. Careful not to snap off any rusty looking bolts, just make sure they're not loose - no need to over tighten.

check: manifold to head, manifold to y-pipe, y-pipe to muffler

I'd go with the headers. If you are gonna spend money just to go a bit faster I'd think the headers are the best bang for buck. I put headers on a 318 Dodge motor once and it was like night and day difference in how it ran. I assume taking off the stock Y pipe and muffler didn't hurt either. Two cherry bombs with side exit. Heck, you could just remove the stock single exaust and have a good local muffler shop that bends it's own pipes make you up a dual exaust system fairly cheaply ($300? with new sport mufflers) and have a faster sounding ride anyway.

Oh, you could always take out that pesky firewall and drop in an almost stock old school 12 valve Cummins 5.9 Diesel and get a new drivetrain to take the torque.
