I was so happy with the results that I just had to post this.
The fan clutch on the strange rover has been frozen for a good long time now and I've grown accustomed to the extra noise and power loss. In fact, I really just thought that was the way it was supposed to be.
Well, I replaced the frozen fan and clutch with a used D90 fan and clutch that I got for $40 and what a difference! It is much quieter and more responsive now. It feels like 10 more squirrel power under the bonnet now.
The D90 fan has 7 blades versus the range rover's 11 and is an inch or two smaller in diameter but the D90 fan blades are actually bigger and longer because of a smaller hub part in the middle. I'll carry around the old frozen one for a while and make sure it is okay in the heat. The A/C condenser and electric fan are removed so that should help make it flow through easier I figure.
