View Full Version : State Forest weekend trip

I've talked to a few of you in the past about this.

Any interest in a weekend up here in the State Forest? We could get a group campsite at a place like R.B. Winter State Park or a group site in the state forest.

Both have their advantages. The state park has bathrooms, a beach, showers, etc...

State forest sites are secluded on back roads and free.

The trails are pretty basic. Most are dirt roads, but there are "driveable trails" in the area that off a little more.

I'm thinking late May or early June?

Anybody else have thoughts on it?

We would be interested, depending on the date.

Are there dates that work better than others?

I try to avoid early May since it's my wedding anniversary on the 11th.

Jake and I would like to attend but the weekends of May 9th and 23rd are not good for us.
I've always been interested in exploring that area.
Jake knows a guy with a D2 who lives out that way who would plan to be there too.

We are free the weekends of 5/9, 5/23 and 5/30

We're interested. No idea of available dates with baseball, tae kwon do and a trip to Australia through June....

I knew a guy that knew a guy once, but I don't know him anymore.

So, I'm hearing early to mid-June?

Anything early June and unfortunately we are out, we will be at the Dunsfold open house.

galen211

Late June? That works for Michael and Bill, anyone else?

We will be at the Dunsfold open house.

Maybe we should all go with Bill to Dunsfold instead?

Otherwise late June looks good for us.

We'll be in Australia.

billcooper
03-11-2015, 11:40 PM
Yup, I think we should all just go to Dunsfold...

But here is another idea, what if we just do one trip in May and one in late June?

galen211
03-13-2015, 09:36 AM
I can't really do two trips, but of course you are all welcome to go on your own and I can advise where to go.

billcooper
03-13-2015, 11:46 PM
I understand. It will probably be next to impossible to pick a weekend where everyone is free, so lets just pick a weekend and go from there.

We could always wait till August and combine with the Mid-Atlantic Overland Festival?

I would be. Trevor is going to do some work on my truck and once that's done I would love to.

Anybody interested in September?

Absolutely interested. The only weekend that doesn't work for us is the one after Labor Day (12th/13th).
Jake and I would also visit his brother who moves in up there next month.

galen211

That same weekend doesn't work for me either.

How about the 26th and 27th?

Sadly, most of September is bad for us (I'm in the UK from the 10th to the 27th), but have fun and post some pictures!

Talked to Michael and he is good for this weekend too. I will start looking for a spot to camp. I will be aiming for R.B. Winter State Park. It is close to the best trails and would be nice to have bathroom/showers, etc. Second choice will be a spot in the state forest itself.

galen211
08-20-2015, 09:31 AM
RB Winter does not have a group camping site, we would have to reserve several adjacent campsites. Each campsite is about $31/night, but you can have 5 people at each site.

Hey G,
So should we call and reserve a site? Or, are you asking everyone to pitch in once there if you use club money to reserve them. Thanks.

galen211
08-22-2015, 05:59 PM
I'm curious what others want to do.

Find a free spot in the state forest or reserve sites where there are toilets, showers, etc.

Personally I plan to bring Charlotte and Jess so amenities would be nice to have.

galen211
08-22-2015, 06:18 PM
As a follow up. I can reserve spaces using club funds to ensure we get spots together, then people can just pay me that weekend. I just need to know what people want to do.

If you don't mind the leg work I would appreciate your handling the reservations and logistics.

There is a chance that I can wheel Saturday but have to head home that night.

Sounds like amenities might be best, but Jake and I will go along with any option that you recommend. We moved Jake's brother into his dorm on Saturday so we are looking forward to the trip back to Happy Valley.

Great to hear Larry!

I reserved 3 sites, 2 next to each other and another across from those 2. #'s 48, 49 and 50.

Here's a map: http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/cs/groups/public/documents/document/dcnr_003182.pdf

All have electric and are close to water. 48 and 49 are also pet sites in case anyone wants to bring a dog. Each site can have 5 people, but only one car so extras will have to park in a nearby lot.

So far we have:

Larry C
Matt K
Jeremy B
Jake B
Michael P
Galen and family
Sven
Stuart

My truck is still at Trevor's. Not sure where things stand. I might have some logistical issues too so I might need some help getting the truck from his place to up there.

This makes me think Trevor needs to attend and deliver via LR3 and a trailer.

I'm not going to make it as 2 of 3 of my Rovers aren't ready to go, and the one that is, wont go fast enough to make it just a day trip!
The 2A on the other hand, is likely to be running and driving today, and I'm considering just re-arching the left rear spring to level the Rover out for now.....

It looks like I'm out. The logistics are nearly impossible. I wouldn't be able to leave NJ until 5:30-6:00. It's about 3 hours to Trevor's and then maybe 2 1/2 or 3 to get to camp. I don't think I could make that happen. Which sucks.

At this point I can't cancel the reservation without losing the money. I can try to change the dates or the couple of people that haven't spoken up can still go?

09-23-2015, 07:53 PM
I doubt it helps Michael but I could set up a tent for you to be ready when you arrive Friday night so you don't have to worry about all that. I even have a cot I could set up to be ready and we could get a slow start on Saturday.

Yep. I have my masters in academic administration. I need 2 more classes to wrap up my admin cert in NJ. I'm nearly at the end of my teaching rope. Unless I could find a photo class job. But our lousy HS doesn't offer anything fun.
