View Full Version : Paragon Week of June 19th anyone

Hey guys. Galen and I were talking and it looks like he may debut the yet-to-be-named 88" at Paragon in June.

Since school is over for me the 13th, and since the trails are far less crowded during the week, we were thinking about a day trip during the week of June 19th. I would most prefer Thursday the 22nd, but noting is set. It’ll be sometime that week.

But, we wanted to invite our fellow Rover members. I did not post this on Discoweb or elsewhere for that reason.

That said, with my stock DII and Galen’s maiden voyage, we plan to stick to the easy trails and generally light stuff. I would love for an experienced driver and Paragon expert to join us. I know it might be boring on the lighter trails, but we could use the expertise.

If you’re interested, you can e-mail or PM either Galen or myself.

Thursday is good for me also. This could be the pre-AGM/picnic run. Any takers?

G -- Ben is out -- has to work.

Not sure what we can do if no one else comes through. Just had a brainstorm though. It'd be sweet to get someone with an LR3 to join us. I'd be curious to see one off-road for myself.

What about Matt? He have anything 4-wheel-drive?

Outside shot Mike might buy a Jeep soon, so he might join us, but I'm thinking not.

I'll go. I can either bring the super Disco with all of the equipment or my bone stock 95 SWB with still functioning EAS.

Trevor,

It would be great to for you to come out. RRC or Disco is your choice, just glad to have someone with off-road knowledge along for the ride.:)

mlp141
05-24-2006, 10:22 AM
Trevor, That is great. Either rig is great, like Galen said, but since we're both stock and have no recovery gear beyond straps, maybe the Disco would be nice.

So, that makes three trucks. Anyone else interested?

Galen -- A couple of quick questions:

1) Get that title yet?
2) Get the truck home yet?
3) Jess coming with us to Paragon on the 22nd? I believe Alicia is.
4) What about the AGM/Picnic? Alicia is going to go - it'd be nice if Jess was too.
5) What about tires for the SIII? Are you going to have decent rubber for our trip? I may be able to swing mud tires for my truck by then!

1) Not yet but should be here very soon.
2) Coming home tomorrow after work.
3) Doubt it, she doesn't have much vacation time till it resets in July.
4) Probably, but I haven't officially asked her yet.
5) Hope to, I have a bunch of things to list on Ebay and that will be my tire money, I plan on doing that tonight.

2) Towing it? Driving it? Nighttime run in the dark? Do tell.
3) No worries. I think Alicia will have a good time nonetheless if she decides to go.
4) AGM should be fun! We need to play softball.
5) Where are you getting your tires from. I am hoping to get mine squared away bwefore we go. I was thinking online and having them mounted and balanced locally. Or, maybe Sams or just a local dealer. Still thinking Dunlops?

Dunlop RT 235/85 are what I am running on 16's. Nice tire.....
Tire rack has 5 for about $650 plus shipping. I went to my local garage and he quoted me $600 installed. And I thought tirerack.com was cheap....

Thanks, but I have 15" rims.

I am probably going to get 30 X 9.50 Dunlop Mud Rovers. This the same size that Jeff runs and they look good on the series. At $100/tire mounted and balanced that is about as cheap as it gets.

Hey Sean,

You're a self-employed guy, you should come out with us.

Actually, I'm trying to clear my calendar for that day. Being self-employeed, I have the following items to clear:
10:30 wake up
10:37 get coffee
11:02 Get in Hammock
11:25- 1:30 Surf Rover websites, cause general mayham
1:31 - 2:30 Nap time
2:31 - 5:00 Work on 109, wash, wax shine, armour-all tires and interior
5:01 - 7:30 Open beer, Fire up grill, chase wife around
7:31-9:30 Watch movies, eat dinner continue with beer
9:31-11:30 Surf Rover sites, make list of things to replace on Rover
11:31-2:30 Make list of things to do the next day
2:35 Whew! Damn tough day, head to bed

Maybe we'll get Peter Reed in his Series also...... and I'll check with Evan

Actually I am picking on Sean because I know the truth, self-employed people are never "off" the clock.

Are you seriously trying to come out that day Sean? It would be great to have that many Series trucks out. We should see if Jeff is available too.

Here's updated pics of the truck untaped and with a new grille. Also the cubby box I made for the center console.

mlp141
05-26-2006, 11:50 AM
Glad you put those up -- I was going to ask you to e-mail some so I acn show my Dad. He got into town yesterday.

That cubby box -- is it from a Ser. III? The radio is nice -- but do you have speakers in the truck?

I was thinking of using a Defender cubby -- or maybe even rigging up a CJ one. But, series IIs don't have speakers (I think), so that may require some creative work.

Got any other pix? before and after would be cool.

Also, have you decided on a set of tires? Dunlops? Size?

I am going to go with 245/75/16s -- I can score GY MTRs for $123/tire. But, the shipping is $70, which brings things up to about $141 tire. I'm figuring then another $15-25 each for the rim swap, mounting and balance. But, I am seeing if my brother-in-law's cousin will do the work cheaper for me. Even if he'll just mount then and swap the rims, I can hit a regular place for the balance and allignment.

I made that cubby box completely from stratch. I wanted something that looked like the Defender box but those and Tuffy boxes are expensive. So I made my own. Including the radio it cost me $50.

When we pulled back the carpet in the interior there are holes were someone had mounted speakers in the bulkhead behind the seats so I guess there is a place for speakers.

Thanks, I'll be happy once I get the proper wheels on there and get rid of those J$%p looking spoke wheels.

Come on out, we may have a decent sized group for a Thursday! I hope so.

mlp141
05-26-2006, 12:22 PM
G -- details on making the cubby por favor. I may be utilizing your services for a box for the II. It looks great. Is it wood or metal?

I am thinking of buying a marine-grade stereo though, since I will not have doors or roof on all summer long

That said, I also thought about some kind of detachable face/removeable setup.

How are you going to run the power for it? What about an antenna?

I contemplated no antenna and an iPod jack in the stereo. WHo needs "radio" anyway ;-)

Peter
05-26-2006, 12:38 PM
I think I can make it.

galen211
05-26-2006, 12:41 PM
The box is made of plywood that was scrap around the house. It has to have an angle to match the angle of the seat box and I used the homemade box that was in the truck as a template then added on to it. The bottom is what would be the lid on the seat box if there was a toolbox. Jess sewed the vinyl to go around the corners and we used spray glue to attach it and staples on the hidden edges.

The lid has foam in it that was left-over as well. I trimmed the edge to have a rounded edge and then used batting to make it look clean. Jess had most of the sewing knowledge and I wouldn't have been able to do it without her.

The cupholders I found at Wally world and they fit in the box like a glove, I got lucky on that one. The flat surface under the radio is plastic from a plastic notebook. I simply took the notebook and cut it to match the shape of the wood underneath it and glued it together.

The radio is the same one I have in my car. I have always been happy with so I looked one up on Ebay. Because it's older I got the same one for $30 shipped. Like I said before, my truck had a stereo at one point so there is an antenna on one of the front wings and the wire is in the dash. As far as wiring goes I'll defer to my dad and have him help me. I also have two cigarette lighters to install in the box for GPS power and whatever else.

I'll let you know when it comes time for powering everything.

Here are two of the before shots vs. the current.

I still need to paint the roof and switch out the wheels.

mlp141
05-26-2006, 01:20 PM
What do the wheels look like anyway? Not wagons I hope!

What tires are you looking at? What size?

Doing the roof white again? I am debating that. Might go all orange. The white will help keep things cool, but I have no intention of having the roof on in summer.

galen211
05-26-2006, 01:35 PM
The wheels look like the ones found here but they are 15" not 16".
http://gallery.roversclub.org/displayimage.php?album=1&pos=101

As for tires I only have a few choices in 15" as the American market loves wide tires and I need skinny. I am probably going to get 30 X 9.50 Dunlop Mud Rovers. If I step up to 33 X 9.50 my only choice is the BFG AT.

We'll see how much money I have when the time comes. I'll let my wallet decide which ones are best. I have never heard anyone complain about either tire.

The roof will be painted off-white. LR's name for it is Limestone, my name for it is Krylon Almond Appliance paint. The wheels have already been sandblasted and painted with this color. They look almost brand new.

Hey that's odd, my roof is "almond" too!

I haven't even driven my series yet (tonight's the maiden voyage home) and I already like it. I can't think of another vehicle that I could get away with spray painting the entire vehicle if I wanted too and it would still look OK.

G -- there's nothing between 30s and 33s in that size? Why not look for something in the 31.5 outside diameter range.

Or, see if you can dump the 15s on eBay and get some 16" rims in exchange.

mlp141

Nice. The more ROVERS guys the merrier. If we can get Steve and his Series I, all the leaf-sprungs will be represented!

galen211
05-26-2006, 02:51 PM
Tire costs go way up when you switch to 16" and it's not worth the bother. There are not any choices in between because nothing it made skinny enough for the LR. Everything is 10.50" or wider and I don't want that look on my series. I want to be rolling skinny style.

Well, I'm waiting on Rovertym for a tie rod for my Disco, time to replace all of the tie rod ends, and fit a new winch rope.
The biggest variable for me is the arrival of the rest of the package from Rovertym: I've got a DI in for a winch, winch bumper, sliders, diff guards, as well as an engine, transmission, and brakes by the 23rd. I have all of the driveline parts and should be done with them by Tuesday, but I'll be waiting on the RTE stuff.
Todd confirmed with the LR3 and Derek with the '00 DII.

Me, I'm feeling the pressure of finishing a customer's vehicle when I said I would, even though the delays have not been of my doing.
I also know that I promised to help some friends with their off-roading and would much rather spend the day choking on coal dust than sweating to the oldies (station)!
