Why should the Garden state fellows have all the fun. Lets start a central pa meeting...Galen, any ideas?

galen211

If it was the summer I would say the Lewisburg Freeze, they have the best peanut butter soft ice cream in the world! Or The Fence, an original 1930's car hop across the river from Bucknell.

We could meet somewhere between W-Port and State College and get Sven and Stuart involved too.

Any ideas on a cool place in Williamsport Cary?

solihull109
11-29-2006, 03:11 PM
I think somewhere around Lamar? is about half way. I don't know of any places yet but maybe we could check it out.
:o

solihull109
11-29-2006, 03:12 PM
I don't think the words "cool" and "Williamsport" should be used in the same sentence..lol:D

sven
11-29-2006, 03:18 PM
I'll do Lamar..We can hang with the truckers :D

solihull109
11-29-2006, 03:24 PM
OK, but I'll have to run my exhaust straight up the back of the cab, BIG RIG style!!:D

galen211
11-29-2006, 03:36 PM
There is a Dairy Queen at the Lamar exit. This might make it family freindly.

Not sure they accept big rig style at the DQ though.:D

What about Renovo or Lockhaven?

galen211
11-29-2006, 04:11 PM
What about Renovo or Lockhaven?

Renovo is a little far North for me. Lock Haven is too.

I can get to Lamar on back roads but that would be an hour and a half in Series time. Sorry I'm the slow poke. I will take the Series on highways but 80 may be a little too much.

Sven if you can get to Williamsport we have a decent microbrew called The Bullfrog. Family friendly if it's earlier in the night.

solihull109
11-29-2006, 04:23 PM
Yikes Sven, do you kow what they say about Lock Haven/Renovo? "That's where the men are men and the sheep are shakin"....LOL:D I think the D.Q. would be cool, Galen I need to hook you up with an overdrive!

sven
11-29-2006, 05:01 PM
So when you guys wanna do this thing?

solihull109
11-29-2006, 06:07 PM
Since you guys are in State College, why don't I just drive there? There is a ton of cool places there, right?:) I'd like to meet soon, how's everyone's schedule?

Stuart

solihull109
11-29-2006, 07:22 PM
OK, it's been a little while since I've been to S.C.,(like 8 yrs) so where is Otto's and what night/time?

sven
11-29-2006, 09:04 PM

Yeah, I realized how nice overdrives are when I left Robesonia with Jeff Wilson and he passed me on the highway like I was sitting still. Made me think it might be worth it.

solihull109
11-30-2006, 09:17 AM
Galen, personally I think you ready to step up to 2.8, with anR380 and lt230, but that's just my input......that's another thread all by itself:D Friday nights usually work better for me, but I might be able to work something out otherwise.

lol, I think that engine alone is worth more than my three cars combined.

Otto's is good for me too, I could always stay in town a little longer one night.

galen211
12-01-2006, 08:31 AM
I might have found another member for our little gang. Found a note on the Rover last night when I went to move it. There is a guy that lives outside of town with a IIa 88" and he has been the owner for 35 years!

So this week did not work.
How about Tuesday Dec. 5th at 5:00 at Ottos?
What do you all think?
Thanks - Stuart

sven

galen211
12-04-2006, 05:43 PM
Just got the OK from the boss but she'll be along too since we commute together.

No Rover for me though, I'm dumb enough to drive it 70 miles in the 30 degree morning to be there that evening, but the boss isn't.

Hope to see you guys there.

Hey Sven, I remembered that guy's name, It's Al Liberte.

Later,
G

Hey Galen, it's not that you're " dumb enough", it's called LOYALTY.:D

Maybe this winter when the Mrs. non rover gets stuck in the white stuff she'll come to love the rover and it's freezer like qualities...lol

See you guys tomorrow night!

spechols
12-04-2006, 06:34 PM
Galen,

You will not be the only one.
Lets see now – I got no title, no registration, no insurance, no plates, possibly no lights, and a few beers on a cold night.
Seems perfectly normal, but, I think I will come without the Rover this time.

Stuart

See you guys tomorrow night!

On Sunday when we were setting up it got quite comfy in the cab, but I guess three straight hours of sitting idling will do that.

I managed to stuff the vacuum line back into the fitting on the carb and it fixed my low idle/oil pressure problem when I come to a stop. I need a new fitting as the "fix" isn't going to last long. But letting it sit and idle like that does get it warm in there.

In college, senior year, I lived off campus. Then my car died. Winter in New Hampshire can be a bit cold and I had to walk about 3 miles over two damn windy bridges. I bought a Korean War era Army wool full length trench coat at Goodwill and wore it that winter.

I never looked at it again until I bought my Series......

galen211
12-05-2006, 10:02 PM
Didn't you put in one of those JC Whitney heaters? How well does that work?

When I go to the soft top I plan on getting one of the curtains that goes behind the driver and installing one of those heaters.

I never looked at it again until I bought my Series......

That reminds me of the Winter break when I decided that it would be a good idea to drive home (Pasadena, CA -> NJ -> Pasadena) for winter break (via skiing in Utah and a friend's wedding in Indiana). in Dora. The return trip included picking up a friend in Michigan. That return trip was **COLD**. So cold that I made a little air scoop with duct tape and computer perf board to force more air across the SIII heater. We ran a bungee cord between the door tops so that they woudn't flex as much and let in the drafts of air. We were in full parkas with wool hats and ski gloves. Oh and we had our sleeping bags across our laps. (Did I mention that it was cold?).

Years later Eric did the run from Mich to Pasadena in a more normal car and
commented on how much easier it was and so much less of an adventure. On top of the cold we had a mechanical issue to resolve in NM (cracked rotor) and bridges do freeze before the roads which leads to excitement and drama.

I have two bungees on other side to pull the door tops in. Problem is I keep forgetting they are on when I try to get out.

So, do we want to try again some time next week?

spechols
12-08-2006, 01:41 PM
At this point, the week after next works much better for me.
Given that we will hopefully get together this Sunday at Sunbury, I would suggest we put off the Central PA Monthly gathering until Wednesday the 20th of December.
Just an idea based on my own time problems – What do you all think?

My dog thanks you for the concern however Jessica said she will go home next week, do some Christmas shopping and let him out. Will you be down here on campus that you could give me a ride to the meeting?

Cary is going to bring me home so anytime is OK for me.

galen211
12-17-2006, 11:35 PM
I can do days but no beers for me. I'll just order an Otto's brewed Root Beer.

I may also need a daytime ride depending on which one of us takes the car to work that day....

Friday would also not be a problem.

OK – I got one more idea for the first monthly meeting – I am a bachelor this week because dear wife is out of town working. So, I can offer dinner and drinks at my house on Tuesday, Wednesday or possibly Thursday. My incentive is that I could call it a pre-shop night and get you all to look at the loose steering on my newly acquired SIII rover’s and help me make a “must do, could do, don’t do” list of repairs. Your incentive is that you get to tease me about my Landover, I have excellent beer and I provide good man food. I have extra bedrooms if anyone needs to stay the night and I also make excellent coffee (my only true talent). I could also be during the day if needed.

Just an idea - Stuart

sven
12-18-2006, 11:26 AM

Ok...so whats the decision?

BTW, I happen to find a 95 RRC parked in one of the dorm lots at PSU. Looked to be owned by a rover enthusiast..Lift, tires, skidplate, etc. I should've left my card with roversclub.org written on it...oh well

Sounds to me like the "FLATLANDERS" are all talk about a good time, typical....all show and no go. If the city folks ever decide to venture outside of thier "protective zone" and venture north, better pack expedition weight attire, because I know the fresh mountain air is too cold for you!

solihull109
01-26-2007, 08:22 AM
Once again, very typical response. They just "read" about it, provide some, SOME technical info, but leave it at that, without embarking on their own and breaking free from the masses. So tell me, what's it like to be a sheep?

On a lighter note, it would be great to get more people involved, plan on Sat.? meetings maybe, so others can travel, if its during the day, I can provide a "playground" of off road activities.....just a thought.( we can go wheelin at night, but that will scare the city folk for sure....)

Other than the Dairy Queen, are there any other cool places in Lamar...?, or very close to that. That's just over a 30 min. drive, so that's half way. Anyone?

There's a couple of truckstops and a McDonalds. Maybe we can get a McShake and try to pick up some "Lot Lizards"

Get ready for this one(Sean will have a field day here), in the village of Hyner, there are some really tough roads....no joke, 4wd is a must and if there's snow can be even harder....

Hyner:
Following the first commercial iron forge in the area, founded by George Wendt, the town was temporarily named Wendtville. Years later, the town was renamed Hyner after a prominate Butcher. Years later, his sexual appetite and deviations, were revealed when his personal journal was discovered. Despite every effort to go back to the original name, town officials have been unable to shake off being the town in which the phrase "Hyner, the salami man" soon became an American slang term for sex, "Hide the salami"

Rob P,

I usually head up 441 along the river from Columbia, then cut across the river to 11-15-322. I don't think a convoy with the old Jeep truck will be a good idea, as I will be hauling about a ton of diesel, gearbox and other Series oddments. At 180K miles, the Jeep is beginning to show its age.

For your info, I have an OBDII scanner / resetter if you need one again.

Thanks for the offer. If we were taking the Disco.....

Group,
I was planning to put the meeting time to the group and let the out of town rovers decide on lunch or dinner.

However, I am also thinking that we could just start at 2:00 with food (late lunch) and let it run into dinner around 6:00 for the second serving. Then let people work out what they want. Obviously, camp fire will be later for anyone that wants to be there.

What do you think?

Rob P
05-16-2007, 07:17 PM
I like the 2pm start time myself. Gives me time to gather together the 4 month old and the S.O. and head up to your locale. I will need specific directions. We'll most likely leave to come home around 7pm as mommy is fairly rigid in Grady's bedtime. (Although the 2 hour drive home will count a long way towards his "bedtime" as sleeping in the car for 2 hours will make him want to get up at 5 a.m. for the next day.)

Many thanks to Stuart and Miss Ann for hosting. It was fun. Fire pit looks very nice and the beagles are friendly. Good food and a good time. Nice to meet Bob, Dawn, Jess, Sven, Dave? Got to hand crank Galen's buggy, that was interesting.

Long drive though up and back. Stuart needs to move closer. Didn't have too many crying fits from my baby on the road. Worst one was about 20 minutes from home so we pushed onward trying to just get back. Got home just after 9pm and that was leaving Stewie's house just after 6.
