View Full Version : Pa. Trail Clean-up?

Before I go and write officials at the State Forestry office I was wondering if there is any interest in doing a PA trail clean-up much like Frank does in NJ?

The state forest's offers lots of "driveable trails" and I think it would be a goodwill gesture to ask if there is an area that needs cleaned up and use that day to explore at the same time.

Let me know if anyone is interested in this idea....

I'm in 100 %, Let me know if you need help contacting etc.

There are some really cool trails/unimproved roads as well, which have outstanding views.
Let me know, thanks:)

Sproul Forest would be perfect. Very scenic and tons of water crossings. There's even a cool RR tunnel and old bridges.

Is the railroad tunnel something you can drive through?

Heck I might even mosey up from the south.

Oh yeah. I looks scary when you approach it because you cant see light at the other end. But that is because the tunnel turns a bit. Its actually quite short though.

The river crossings are nice, there is about a dozen or so.

OK, I'll look up some info tomorrow and see if I can find the right person to ask.

I like what Frank organizes over in NJ and think it is a good idea so I would like to see that idea extended into PA. Any advice on how to approach the Forestry service Frank?

These trails in Sproul are actually LEGAL for licensed vehicles. Its illegal for ATVs, dirtbikes, etc.

I know of lots of roads over in Bald Eagle State Forest that are the same way. They aren't hardcore but it still makes for a fun day.

I'm in!

If the trails are legal for trucks to drive on I bet it won't be difficult to get permission to do so. The area we go to in NJ is off limits to any motorized use that is why it was difficult to get the green light from the park. Start by going to the park office (if there is one) and speak to them in person if possible. I started by writing letters and didn't get anywhere until I showed up on their front steps.

You could use the Ringwood State Park trips as reference and I could get you contact names and numbers if you'd like. I think we're up to 7 trips now since '03 and the park has been very pleased with our work.

Let me know how I can help.

As a new member to the club, I'd be interested as it would give me a chance to meet some other members!

Any thoughts on timing?

I'd be interested. Just need enough warning to plan it.

So far I have an email into Sproul State Forest and Bald Eagle State Forest and so far nothing.

Frank may be right and I may have to go knocking on their doorstep.

don't get discouraged either Galen - It took me 15 months to get the first trip off the ground, and it was the third park that finally took me up on the offer

the second trip with the same park took about 6 months to get all the necessary permissions, and now i just call them and set a date anytime :)

once you establish a relationship with them it should go smoothly, but they must learn to trust you first - though it may help that you can explain the club has been successfully doing this in other places and reference Ringwood State Park

you may have an easier time than i did come to think of it - the parks you are looking at have a system of trails that allow vehicle traffic

i sent you an email at your hotmail account - i thought i remember you having a gmail account, but i couldn't find that address

Hello All

My name is Bob Campbell (Collegeville, PA) and I'm a sick middle-aged lover of LR's, all types, all sizes! I owned a 93 LWB which I just loved but after paying $3K for the car and $11K for the repairs over a year, my wife (who I love and adore) said trade it and buy a new one. This led me to an 03 Disco which I just couldn't be happy with stock. As soon as I figure out how to reduce my picture size, I will post some photos.

My 7 year old son (Trey) is a car/truck freak and loves to go wheelin - actually an old pro of Paragon. I've been looking for a club with people of similiar interests and looking around, I believe I found it!

Look forward to the upcoming activities and getting to know other LR owners as "whacked" as I am.

Made contact with someone yesterday at the main office in Harrisburg. They in turn send out my name to all the local parks and forests. We'll see what I get from there.......

Here's a piece of the email I got from Bald Eagle State Forest. We can choose all sorts of things. My choose would still be trash pick-up but a park improvement project wouldn't be out of the question.

We have several volunteer opportunities at the Park. Opportunities include: trail maintenance, trail monitor (hiking the trails monthly basis and notifying us of improvement areas), butterfly trail maintenance, office work, campground host, general park improvement projects, litter clean-up, and assisting with environmental education and interpretation programs. The level of commitment varies among the volunteer jobs.

Trash clean up is probably best for a ROVERS group, but so is general trail maintenance (clipping branches back, removing fallen trees, etc). I sent some pictures to you - hopefully the email goes through because it was big.

I've got a IIa front axle that would look really nice on the side of the trail. It's currently in my back yard giving it that "white trash" curb appeal.:D

Soon, the group Pa Cleanways will have a meeting in February to decide the cleanup dates for the upcoming year. Once I get an email with those dates we can choose when we would like to go.
