I finally truly started working on my Rover this weekend with the intent of starting a motor swap from gas to diesel. A few days with a lot of advice from friends and the front of the Rover is gone. So, the easy part is done. Now I am trying to figure out the motor mounts to fit a 2.5na diesel into a SIII. (Please don’t bother telling you each think I should be considering five other motors – been there done that – lets move on) Looks like I will need to do some cutting and welding for the motor mount under the injector pump. If anyone has done this or knows how to avoid it – please let me know.

Do you think the pass siide mount can be swapped from the gas motor to the diesel? It LOOKS like it SHOULD work, right?

Tried that with the diesel motor on the lift, but the pump still hits the outrigger that holds the mount.

I've been looking into a 2.5TD engine and I think the same problem (i.e. the need to shorten one of the engine mounts). Here are some pictures from another person's website:

In an e-mail to me he said "you have to alter the mount - it doesn't "move" so to speak, the series one is simply too long & hits the injector pump.
I cut mine off & shortened it, then welded it back on at a slightly different angle."

That looks like what is needed. I setup the diesel mount with the old mount on the frame to show the problem better.

From what I've read on the S2 Club forum, the 2.5td engine has additional (rearward) mounting holes cast in the block. These need to be drilled/tapped and then you can use the old petrol mounts.

Does your 2.5NA block have these as well?

Nothing on my motor even remotely fits that description – But you did make me go look one more time.:D

I think I have a plan, but I really like the group ideas - what do you think of this? It is in more the one post becasue of the photos.

Last set of photos - weld as needed

What do you all think?

I guess the captions did not transfer, so a little explanation would be helpful.:D

The blue lines are control lines showing the existing mount location and the intended location for the new mount.

The red lines are cut lines.

The red dots are the drill and bolt locations

I spoke with a friend who put a 2.5NA in his 88. He did not have to muck around with the frame mount (as you suggest), he simply bolted it in place using the second set of mounting holes in the block and the 2.25 mounts(what I described in my previous post). He didn't even have to drill/tap them! I should have photos from his lump in a day or so...

Are you sure you do not have these mounting holes, possibly hidden behind the mount ???

Here are a few links from the S2 Club site on installing a 2.5NA. (Pay close attention to details in Glen Anderson's posts...)

Great info Tom P.
I will look into it.
Thanks - Stuart

why not just put the engine in place then build the mount on the engine to mount up to the frame mount...

Stuart,

Did you get that motor in yet?

I'd like to know how you resolved the mount issue when you're all done...

Yeah Stuart, how's that boat anchor coming along?

I have not had the time to solve the mount issue yet, but I will soon.
Looks like cutting and welding on the frame will be the way to go.
A Sherpa motor would fit as is - but that is not what I have.
I will keep you posted.

Can you weld?....if so I have a bunch of stuff I will hire you for.

Good post right here: http://p200.ezboard.com/25-NA-diesel-Conversion-into-series-3-Landy/fgunsandroversfrm1.showMessage?topicID=7403.topic

"If the engine used came from a Sherpa(14J or 15J) it drops onto the
>> original chassis brackets & you use the original series 2.25 engine
>> brackets, this is possible because the fuel injection pump is high
>> mounted.
>> If the donor was a 90 or 110(12J or 19J) then the right hand chassis
>> bracket will require modifying due to the lower mounting of the fuel
>> injection pump, the left hand is again with the L/H series setup. The
>> required R/H modification is quite simple; completely remove the original
>> chassis bracket, weld in its place the original series right hand engine
>> bracket upside down(jig in position by using original engine before
>> removal) with a bit of additional stiffening as you think suitable, R/H
>> 90/110 engine bracket on engine and an original rubber mounting to sit
>> on."

TeriAnn Wakeman has put a 200tdi section on her web site. It is in progress, so updates will be forthcoming, but she ties several projects together and has links as well.
