Video of somebody destroying a LR axle joint/half shaft in a shaft testing machine.

Nice! Looks like those guys need to learn a little bit about safety. The shadow could have been eating a metal sandwich.

yeah, no plexiglass shield on that side eh?

It would be nice to have a point of reference such as a common Dana shaft or something comparable to give a perspective as to the strength of the d90 shaft. By the way, that video reminded me of a safety training video from work where something goes horribly wrong and "the shadow guy" gets an eye gouged out by flying d90 needles.

Jason - the stock 24 spline rover half shaft (1.24") should be in the middle of a dana 35 (1.16") and a 44 (1.31") in terms of strength and pretty much equal to the AMC 20 (1.25") that was in the rear of your CJ-7. The 10 spline rover axles are just 1.11" in diameter. Materials, length, geometry, and splines come into play as well as diameters but they are pretty similar across the board here. However, the fully floating hub design on a classic/d90/d1/series makes it easier to change out a broken axle or limp home without one and theoretically lessens the stress on the shaft since it is loaded in torsion only (no bending stresses like a semi-floater).

Fluid dynamics? I had that class from 8am to 12pm four days a week in the summer with the most boring professor. Ask away - if I don't know then somebody around here (school) will know. Maybe Galen will know as well - I believe he's an ME as well.

I am a lowly 3D CAD monkey. If you want something designed I'm your man!
