Hello everyone. I am new to this site and hope to become a member and join you guys in the future and be able to go to one of your events. I live in Rockville Maryland. I have a 1996 Discovery and was wondering if anyone could help me with this question. I recently did a 2" lift to my Discovery. Currently I have a set of 235/70/16, but want to buy bigger tires. What is the most I can go with this type of lift. I was thinking of 245/75/16 or 265/75/16. I am concerned that if I go with 265/75/16, they are going to be to wide and the car won't have enough clearance at the time of going off road. I think the 245/75/16 would work, but I am not sure. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance

Regards,

Fredd

Hi Fredd,

If you go larger than the stock 235/70 then you'll have to do a small amount of trimming to the quarter panel just behind the back tires or there is a way to go larger without cutting the body though, go to www.discoweb.org and go to the tech section and then to "rear fender relocation". There's also instructions on how to trim under "fender trimming". If you drive your truck everyday you probably wouldn't want to go larger than the 245/75 otherwise gas mileage and power will really suffer (unless you also want to re-gear the diffs). Even with that size you may notice a small drop, but it shouldn't be a big deal.

245/75/16 will fit fine without any cutting - may have to space out the quarter panel a quarter inch, but that's all.

Better size is 235/85/16, but some trimming is required to fit. Power loss with stock 3:54 gears isn't bad with the 235/85, but is about as large as you want to go without losing alot of highway power.

Thanks for the information Bill,

I am thinking about going with the 235/85/16. I have a 2" lift. What kind of trimming do I need to do to make them fit?

Thanks,

Freddie

In the past I've found that installing the tires and trimming where it hits is easier than trying to guess where they may or may not hit, as lift kits, shock travel, tire size, etc varies so much. For example, a 245/65/16 Goodyear MTR is not the same size as a 245/65/16 BFG KM. You may even find, as I did, that you won't have to trim at all. I'd be annoyed if I cut up my truck when I didn't have to.
