My dream of the minute is a diesel powered Defender 90 three door with A/C and automatic trans. Can a guy acquire one with a gas engine and have a 300Tdi installed? Why automatic you immediately ask, just too much stop and go city rush hour traffic for a "stick". I want to drive it 55 miles each way to work day in, day out; and with the same vehicle go on my hunting trips. Thanks for the replies.:D

Yeah, it's doable.. a few people have done the swaps.. it's expensive though.

There is a 94 300TDi d-90 for sale right now... it's 5sp though..

The obvious question is do you have a 90 that you're starting with? If not, it's cheaper and monumentally easier to find a diesel than do the swap. There are plenty of guys here that will agree, i'm sure.

The auto boxes are not the same going from the V8 to the Tdi. It can be done but you better have 20K to have it done correctly.

KevinNY,
Please explain further. I really don't understand, "The auto boxes are not the same going from the V8 to the Tdi."
To All,
Thanks for the responses. I do NOT have any L/R vehicle at this time. Also, I should have asked about the 200Tdi as well as the 300Tdi being mated to an automatic trans, say from a 1997 Defender, [I have no idea if other years of production had autos's] and being swapped into a Defender.

Or about 10k to start, per the Tdi mailing list - from Shane at Rover Hybrids, For Sale:

2.8 HS powerstroke diesel engine and an Ashcroft custom built Land Rover ZF transmission using the internals from a HP24 ZF transmission to better withstand the power of the 2.8. The package is new and has the transmission adapter from M&D engineering to mate the ZF to the 2.8.
This is the waste gate version of the PS engine.

Everything is here in CA.
$10k.

Thats 10k for a drivetrain on a pallet, now you have to get it in the truck and plumbed and wired.

Different shift points etc, not sure the bellhousing is the same either. AC and an Auto will make the tdi a real dog too.

Hi All,

I've entered into an agreement with a man to buy his Series III powered by a 6 Cyl Cummins. It's a Timm Cooper Rover. "I am excited" is a bit of an understatement. :)

Do they make shoe horns that large? A 5.9 dodge type cummins? Or something smaller?

It's a lot different from what I was originally seeking.

But the prices of diesel DEFENDERS are a good bit

more than the price I am paying for this SERIES III.

picked up by the trucking company and the trek to New Jersey will begin!
