Sven got a finally try out his Series. We took along a friend of mine in his '47 Flattie. Most of the trail is old railroad bed, but there are several places where the trail drops of the bed and into the stream where bridges used to be. If you had a lot of time there are trails that splinter off all over.

We came across two guys on an ATV and an Enduro so they rode along with us. We also pulled the one guy's sister up the first hill we came too when her sidekick blew the front end and only had 2wd.

We had to cross one of the bridges and also went through a tunnel. Nothing hard core but a fun day.

And, it appears in the pic of the water crossing that the Rover is NOT connected to a tow rope!
Congrats!

actually that's a local in a series II 109 station wagon crossing the rapids in Tangiers. Amazing what photoshop can do!

I'm currently in NC with the wife's 109, otherwise I would have taken it on this trip . I've wanted to do this road since I saw last year's pics. Any chance of another trip in early July?

3 feet eh? are those 72" tires? lol

Looks like it was a good time, those bridges look a little freaky though. Who is the Zebra?

Those weren't even close to the deep part. That was the shallow crossing. Most of the bridges are gone. Agnes wiped them out in '72 and the rail line has been defunct ever since. In this part of PA you can hear banjos when you drive through......

The zebra is Stuart, out for his virgin ride.....

EDIT: Oh and my winch works really well now.

I wasn't being jerky -- the trails look enjoyable. That's what I meant.

And again, I am jealous.

Out of curiosity, is this area in the photos owned by anyone? It sure looks beautiful. Mostly big, flat open corn fields is all we have in Indiana.

Are you a professor at PSU?

Here in our area of PA we have thousands and thousands of acres of state forest land. In the late 1800/early 1900's companies logged these areas bare. They then gave the land to the state and they have done a great job of rebuilding the area in beautiful forests.

This particular road is a long abandoned railroad line. I'm sure it's primary goal was to haul coal and lumber for these companies way back when.

So G -- is the Series feeling better? BTW, does "it" have a name?

galen211

Not really, it stumbles, sputters and misses pretty bad. You don't notice it off-road as much as on. It's annoying but OK for short trips, a long highway trip would suck. But on this trip I lost my front brakes as well. That is no fun.

Oh and everyone just calls it Solomons so I'm sticking with that. Since I got this one no one asks about the cool old truck, they just want to know if I am from Solomon's Island.

Any chance of another trip in early July?

The only problem is that there is a new natural gas pipeline being installed in this area. It runs right through the trail.....we had to turn around and run the rest of the trail in reverse. So hopefully they will be done by the end if the summer. I guess I'll have to scout it out before we plan the next trip.

As an FYI, we had been in for two hours and only about a 1/4 of the way when we turned around.

G -- I want to go out there and drive around.

Maybe one day this summer I can head out with Mike in his Rubi and hook up with some club guys like Sven who know the area.

I must admit, the 4-door Rubicon idea has been bouncing around my mind. Not sure I can afford the payment though.

Personally, if I was going to get one I would get a unlimited Rubicon, not the new style. Those lwb Jeeps with about a 3-4" and a set of 33's look good to me. Like this (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Jeep-Wrangler-RUBICON-2005-JEEP-RUBICON-UNLIMITED-LWB-NO-RESERVE-LOW-MILES_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6285QQihZ019QQite mZ290239354575QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW) but with a small lift on it.

EDIT: This trail is very narrow, unless Mike wants pin stripes don't take a new truck.

where is this orviston-kato road? It looks like fun. Would my lifted-and-tyred-disco make it thru solo, including the wife and kids??? How could I find other/any off road areas that are fun and not tough but enough to amuse and get muddy? Long Island is not exactly a hot bed of activity.
