View Full Version : New Treads

I'm looking into new tires for my recently aquired '95 (stock) classic, as it still has the original Michelins. I'm seriously considering 215/85R16 Dunlop Rover RT's. I've read that these will fit fine with no rubbing despite the increased diameter.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with these tires, or other tires of this size. If so, how well do they fit? Do they allow the use of snow chains?

I would greatly appreciate any insight.

Thanks,

Trevor

P.S. Any recommendations on exhausts? Inspection time is coming up.

Can't speak about the size, but I have those on the Series and love them.

Yes, folks, there are two Trevors with Land Roveritis in Elizabethtown, PA.!

I have a set of 4 Michelin Synchrones in a 205/80/16. This is the stock size, mostly road oriented, and available for a donation to the Children's Miracle Network.

205/80 is 29"; so is 235/70, and 225/75.
215/85 is about 30.5" as is 245/75
I'm running 235/85 at about 32" but I fitted 2" RTE springs

Personally, my preference is the skinny and tall tyre

Does this mean our date is off?

I've heard good things about the Dunlop R/T. It seems to me it will give the best performance in mud, snow, etc. without going to a full fledged mud tire- I'd like to maintain a little bit of decency on the open road. All the A/T 's I've researched seem to have problems clearing mud. The R/T sounds like it does the best job in a variety of conditions.

If I was driving the RR every day, I would probably take you up on the Synchrones, Trevor. Hmmm, maybe if I could find another set of rims.... no, the better half would never go for it.... but it is for charity. Maybe I'll have a little think about that.

I agree about the tall and skinny. Although I don't really have much experience, I understand that the Classic was designed for a tall and narrow tire. I'm not too excited about adjusting steering stops and cutting metal just get a wider tire on. Apart from sand (and maybe bottomless mud, which I'm going to try to stay away from), I think a narrow tire will be better for what I will encounter.

Thanks for the input guys. If anyone has had 215/85r16's on a classic please let me know.

What type of donation, and are the Michelin's new?

$200 for all four.
The tyres are mostly new. When Jeff bought the LWB 4 months ago, they had only been fitted for about 2 months. So, about 5 months old and not a lot of miles.

Well over 80% on the M/T's? Sounds like this might work out. I could have a set of Synchrones and M/T's. Are both still available?

Pretty sure I'll take them, but I wouldn't mind taking a look first. I can come to you or you could bring them up to Trevor's if you're headed there sometime soon. Let me know what would work best for you. Thanks, Trevor
