    Default Gear Oil

Who is running what for gear oil?
GL-4 vs. GL-5? does it really matter that much over the life of the transmission?
I just switched to synthetic but even with new gaskets and plenty of Hylomar it seems to have sprung leaks from everywhere!!
...yes i know it's a Land Rover, but at least with the 'crude' it would only leave little drops to mark its territory, now it looks like it pissed its pants if I drive it more than 10 miles!

    any suggestions?

Yes, clean oil tends to get through smaller holes.....

Ahhh welcome to the world of Synthetic oils.
Put it in just to see where the leaks are.

Whatever is on sale in a 5 gallon bucket at Pep Boys, the best gear oil is the one you change most often.

In the gearbox(s) I use GL4 from NAPA. There is a longstanding opinion that for old UK cars GL5 will damage bronze parts - I think I cause more damage by poor driving but haven't wanted to take the risk of using GL5. I think that you can use GL5 in the diffs/steering box/relay/swivels.

    Default Gl4

What Peter said. Although, it was near impossible to find any GL4 locally (Frenchtown), even with the NAPA p/n. I did find a Penzoil distributor, and picked-up 15 gallons (3 buckets). I haven't quite worked my way through on of them yet...

I'll post the Penzoil order code shortly.
